Welcome! I am a Ph.D. student in the Department of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

My research examines how the intersection of identities influences political behavior and policy preferences. I am broadly interested in race and ethnic politics, political learning and the politics of immigration.

In my dissertation project, I examine how the transition to parenthood and the salience of parental identity influence policy preferences regarding gun regulation and affirmative action for college admission in the United States. My other projects focus on 1) how perceptions of immigrants as health threat shapes Americans’ support for welfare policies and 2) the political learning of the racial minorities in the US and political participation. I am also interested in designing survey experiments and applying statistical methods to measure identity salience and how policy attitudes change in response to external threats.

I hold B.A. in Political Science and International Relations from Carleton College and M.A. in Political Science from Sogang University in the Republic of Korea. My full name is pronounced as soong-june; you may also call me Joon. I can be reached at my email: seungjoonyoo [at] umass [dot] edu.
